Gault Clay

Cretaceous

The Gault clay contains lots of small marine fossils such as ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, shark and ichthyosaur teeth and vertebrae and many others. At the very top of the Gault is a very distinctive bright green sandstone known as the Upper Greensand. This has been exploited in several places (small pits dug into the ledge at the base of the Chalk where it is at the surface). It is quite a hard stone and can be used in buildings; it is not easy to find, but it can be seen in Husborne Crawley church.
